MCHS New Swim Coach
Coach Sharp's Bio
Coach Sharp started competitive swimming at the age of 7 while living overseas in Saudi Arabia for the Dhahran Dolphins. It was Coach Christi Peterson who was the one responsible for getting him interested in swimming.
After his dad was transferred to Indonesia, he swam in their swimming league representing his school, Caltex American School- Duri Campus. He earned several awards for freestyle and the relays, all high point and top times.
Returning the to U.S., he started high school swimming and water polo at Katella High School in Anaheim, CA under Coach Roy Brown and Coach Rubaclava. There he broke the high school 50 free record, and made the all time top ten in the 100 free and free relay. In water polo, he was the high point scorer his senior year. However, due to a shoulder injury, he had to stop competitive swimming after high school graduation. Other honors Coach Sharp received in high school were: School Athlete of the Year, Swimmer of the Year (2x), Team Captain (swimming and water polo), Most Inspirational Player (water polo), water polo team captain, and high individual and team point award.

Disaster Assistance for Flood Victims
To make it convenient for you, the SBA has set up shop at the Franz Road Store Front which is located WEST of Fry Road on Franz Road. If you or anyone you know was =looded during the heavy rainstorm in April, you will want to talk with the SBA about options that are available to you.
There are three people from the SBA working Monday-Friday, 8 am - 5 pm at the Franz Road Store Front to assist you in completing your application and to advise you regarding what you can and cannot expect. They will be working at this location for about four weeks.
Please pass this along to anyone you know who was a victim of flooding in Harris County.
PLEASE PARK ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE STORE FRONT. Commissioner Radack has set up the room that was used for early voting for the SBA to use in assisting victims.
The SBA will NOT be open on Memorial Day but will be open all other week days for the four week period. I would suggest that you take the time now while the process is beginning to visit with an SBA representative. If you need follow up documentation, etc., you can then return to complete this process.
If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call. finally, thanks to each of you who called to report your flood damage to the Harris County Office of Emergency Management. It is due to your efforts that we have gotten this assistance.
My best,
Annette

KISD update
Katy ISD Administration Recommends No Make-Up for the April 28 Missed Day
(May 12, 2009) - Katy ISD will recommend to the Board of Trustees that the district not make up the April 28 missed day. In making the decision, consideration was given to feedback received from the Katy community, along with attention to the time of year and the impact on family plans. The recommendation will go to the Board of Trustees on Wednesday, May 13, for approval.
May 26 is built into the district calendar for use as a make-up day for bad weather. The Texas Education Agency, however, has indicated that the district does not have to make up the April 28 day. In an effort to make a decision to meet the needs of Katy ISD families, the district posted an online survey to gather input regarding the make-up day.
The district appreciates the input of all who participated in the survey as it served to make a recommendation that took into account the needs of Katy ISD families at this time of year.

Councilmember email Re: District G Flooding
From: districtg@cityofhouston.net
To:
Subject: Flooding in District G
Date: Wed, 6 May 2009 17:16:22 -0500
The flooding event of last week was particularly damaging to homes in District G neighborhoods. While the City cannot predict when the next flooding event will occur, it can take the steps necessary to protect its citizens in the future by keeping storm sewers well maintained and implementing new Capitol projects where needed as development occurs and systems become outdated.
I have received many calls and e-mails regarding the need for drainage improvements in specific neighborhoods across District G. Each of your requests has been submitted to the Public Works and Engineering Department for their expert evaluation. It is very important that you continue to report the needs that exist at individual addresses by also contacting the City’s 3-1-1 Service Help Line. While 3-1-1 may not be able to offer immediate assistance to long term needs, the system does maintain a record of your call and serves as a tool for the Public Works Department to track the number of issues in a specific neighborhood and will assist the department in determining how to prioritize projects throughout the city.
Because the extensive damage sustained, the City will also pick up flood debris from neighborhoods if addresses are reported to 311 or by contacting my office at 832-393-3007.
Currently the City is struggling to maintain our public infrastructure and is continually playing catch up. As the City Council moves forward into FY 2010 Budget deliberations I will fight for a more balanced budget that will provide an equitable funding balance for all core services including improved infrastructure.

Super Neighborhood, Bear Creek/Westlake Flooding News:
My request: Would you please forward this information to any other neighborhoods that may have experienced damage?
“Homeowners should call the Harris County OEM, 713-881-3100. Report your damage, making it clear that we had raw sewage overflowing bathtubs along with various hydrocarbon elements (gasoline, oil and diesel fuel) contaminating the water. Specifically ask that the State declare our area a disaster area immediately. REPORT AN ESTIMATED DAMAGE AMOUNT!”
This will benefit everyone in our area. We are hoping to open up funding for temporary housing, low-interest, low-hassle loan availability for rebuilding, and numerous tax credits for the victims of the flooding.
After we deal with the immediate aftermath of the storms, we are forming a committee to meet with authorities to review our situation. I’m sure we’ll be coming back to you at that time for your advice.
Thank you for any help you can give us!

KISD flu update
H1N1 Flu Update: May 6, 2009 (3 p.m.)
Situation
All district operations are back to normal with Beckendorff Junior High opening May 7. Beckendorff students will take their final TAKS test on Friday, May 8. The ban on out-of-district travel has been lifted and campuses may resume previously canceled school-related activities. The UIL activities are also scheduled to resume May 7. Please check with your campus for the latest information regarding events that may be rescheduled due to previous cancellations.
The district will continue its communication with the local health departments and monitor the situation should there be any further development that impacts district operations. We will continue to keep you updated of significant changes.
Staying Healthy
The health department continues to emphasize the importance of keeping any child who has the flu out of school for seven days and that the child must be fever free without medication for 24 hours prior to returning to school. Although the threat of a severe flu outbreak has diminished, school nurses will continue their standard practices of actively monitoring students who are showing signs of illness to ensure that our schools are safe and healthy learning environments for everyone.
The CDC encourages us to be vigilant for the possibility of a future wave of the H1N1 flu. As such, students and staff members should continue to practice good hygiene to reduce the spread of influenza, including covering their nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (or coughing or sneezing into their sleeve if a tissue isn't available), frequently washing hands with soap and water, or using hand sanitizer if hand washing with soap and water is not possible.
Hand Sanitizers
Several parents have asked if it is okay for their child to bring with them to school hand sanitizer gels, wipes and lotions. The district does allow students to bring these items to school for their own personal use. Students should not, however, bring to school surface disinfectants such as Lysol spray, Clorox wipes or any other chemical disinfectant.
For the safety of all students and staff, Katy ISD must follow strict Hazardous Communications regulations pertaining to the use of chemical cleaners and uses only those approved by the EPA for classroom disinfecting. We appreciate your help in assisting us in keeping our classrooms safe for all students.

For details specific to campuses, go to abc13.com. [Sent: 3:21pm]
KISD flu update
Starting today, Katy ISD will provide parents and community daily updates regarding the district's response to the H1N1 virus. Our goal is to provide the Katy community with timely and accurate information as to the district's response.
Situation
As of today, Beckendorff Junior High is the only campus that remains closed due to a "highly probable" case of H1N1. In addition to classes being canceled, all extracurricular activities and events at Beckendorff are canceled until the school reopens on May 11.
The UIL's suspension of academic and athletic competitions, as well as the district's ban on all student travel outside Katy ISD until May 11 remains in effect. All other events and activities will proceed as scheduled except for those that bring together students from more than one school:
- KISD Technology Showcase, May 6, 5:30 p.m., at Leonard Merrell Center has been postponed until after May 11.
- Pregnancy Education Program Graduation, May 8
Commonly Asked Questions
The following are some of the most common questions the district has received over the past several days. We will continue to add to this list of questions as necessary. If you have a question, please forward it to communications@katyisd.org. We will post answers to the most commonly asked questions here. If you have a question specific to your child's campus, please contact the school directly.
Why are the feeder schools to and from Beckendorff Junior High not being closed as well? The FBCHHS has recommended that larger districts, such as Katy ISD, only close those schools where a highly probable case of H1N1 has been found.
Should the sibling of a child exhibiting flu-like symptoms stay home as well? At this time, Health Department officials are not recommending that siblings of sick students remain at home, unless they themselves are exhibiting flu-like symptoms.
What impact will school closings have on the school calendar? Will the year be extended? The district has not made a decision regarding these days. However, the Texas Education Agency has provided a waiver process for districts that close one or more schools. This process is similar to that which the district applied for last fall after Hurricane Ike. While there is no guarantee that the TEA will grant this waiver, Commissioner of Education, Robert Scott, has sent correspondence to local districts stating that the health and safety of Texas students is our number one priority. We will keep parents apprised as to any development in this area.
Are proms and other school dances and parties canceled? At this time, single school events have not been limited by the Health Department except those noted above.
Will graduation go on as scheduled? At this time, there is no indication that the graduation schedule will change.
Attendance/Exemptions
We understand that there is a great deal of concern about attendance and exemptions, particularly among high school students and parents. While it is important to be in class, we encourage parents and students to put health issues before attendance and to stay home when sick.
The exemption policy has been reviewed and the district will take into account any lost days that are due to the flu.
Rumor Control
Katy ISD communicates several times per day with the Harris County and Fort Bend County health departments. Any recommendation for a school closure will come from either Harris County or Fort Bend County health department officials. Again, as of today, the district has not received notification from either county of any new H1N1 cases in our district. We encourage parents and community members to check the district's website, http://www.katyisd.org/, for the most accurate information regarding school closures.
H1N1 Flu: Information for Concerned Parents and Caregivers
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most people infected with the H1N1 virus in the United States have a mild disease, but some have had more severe illness. Young children, pregnant women and people with chronic disease like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease may be at higher risk for complications from this infection. For more information on steps you can take to protect your family and to know when to seek medical care, visit CDC's article on H1N1 Flu: Information for Concerned Parents and Caregivers.

Lost Dogs in Westlake Forest
One is a yellow Lab, the other is a black Lab . They are both people and dog friendly dogs with sweet dispositions.
The dogs were very hungry and pretty dirty. It looks like they have been wandering for a few days. They may have been abandoned or they may just be lost.
If you know who owns these dogs, please let me know so that we can get these dogs back home.
The woman who has these dogs will call Animal Control to pick them up Monday if the owner isn't found.
Please let me know if these are your dogs or if you know who owns these dogs.

Letter from new President of MCHS Athletic Booster Club
Hello MCHS ABC,
For those of you who do not know me, let me introduce myself. I am Becky Latta, the new Mayde Creek Athletic Booster Club president. My high school son is Brady Atkinson, a football player and soccer player, who is about to enter his senior year. I am married to Mike Latta, the boys varsity soccer coach here at MCHS. I have been involved with the booster club for the past three years and served on a few committees, including vice president of membership this past year.
Parents, please remember that if you have an annual membership, you may begin renewing it starting today. Our next meeting will be Monday, May 4 at 7pm in the Ram Team Room and forms will be available for you to renew your membership!
This year was an exciting year for MC athletics. The football team qualified for the state playoffs for the second year in a row. The girls soccer team made it to the playoffs under the direction of 1st year Coach Elise Karlowicz. The girls basketball team made it to the playoffs. We had our first swimmer to win a state title. Our first golfer to make it to state. And the boys track team took the district title again! These were just a few things that made this year stand out. Next year is going to be very exciting and we have a lot of activities that have already begun. It's time to get involved! We still need several committee chairs; so now is the right time to step up.
It is very important to remember that we are a booster club for ALL athletics at MCHS and the money we raise goes for all athletes. The booster club has provided Mayde Creek athletes with many items that would not have been possible without these funds. Membership fees are just one of the many ways that the booster club can provide items for the athletes that would not have been possible otherwise. But more than the fees, we would like to see more parents become involved in their athlete's booster club. There are so many opportunities available to get involved and serve in the booster club. We need all parents to step up and serve, otherwise it is just the same few parents that give freely of their time to support not only their athlete but yours as well. It does not require a lot of time if every parent will get involved. You will see that we are a fun and friendly group and it is a great chance to get to know other parents of your childs teammates. We would love to welcome you into the booster club and help you find a place to serve!!!
Please come to our next meeting Monday, May 4th at 7pm in the Ram Team Room located in the back of the school in the athletic wing. The back door by the practice fields is the entrance we use and we meet in the room to the right, across from the drill team gym.
We look forward to the 2009-2010 season. Mayde Creek athletics is a force to be reckoned with and we are excited about all the great things that are happening!! Don't be left out! Your athlete is counting on you!!!
Thanks,
Becky Latta - MCHS Athletic Booster Club President

KATY ISD information on Beckendorff closing
“Highly Probable” case of H1N1 found at Beckendorff Junior High in Katy ISD
(May 1, 2009) – Katy ISD received notification today from the Fort Bend County Department of Health & Human Services (FBCHHS) of a “highly probable” case of the H1N1 (swine flu) virus at Beckendorff Junior High. The FBCHHS serves as the lead authority in determining whether or not a school should be closed and for how long, has determined that Beckendorff will be closed for all of next week and will reopen on May 11. Should there be any changes we will notify parents through School Messenger, our district Web site (www.katyisd.org) and eNews for those who have subscribed.
The campus has been in contact with the student’s family and the student is no longer exhibiting symptoms, has responded to treatment and has been cleared by a physician to return to school on May 4.
At this time there have been no additional confirmed or highly probable cases among students or staff at Beckendorff for the past seven days.
Symptoms of Swine Flu
The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Therefore, the presence of these symptoms does not necessarily mean swine flu. Additional information on swine flu can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/key_facts.htm.
What you can do
While there is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu, there are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illness like influenza. Take these everyday steps to protect your health:
- Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. Washing hands with soap and water for approximately 20 to 30 seconds (tell young children to sing the Happy Birthday song twice) will help protect your child from many different germs. When soap and water are not available, wipes or gels with alcohol in them can be used (the gels should be rubbed into your hands until they are dry). - Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. - Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. - Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. - Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
If you have reason to be concerned that you or your child may have swine flu, please contact your family doctor as soon as possible. Swine flu can only be diagnosed by a medical professional. If you are sick, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible to keep from spreading your illness to others.
